Classically trained in photorealistic painting in his native China, Hang's recent paintings are a striking departure from his previous work. His quietly electric 'portraits' of sharks, bears, interiors or abstracted landscapes are rendered in thin flat shapes and fluorescent hues which he considers to be the tones of his generation. Although the work intentionally engages the aesthetics of the internet and a fast-paced online visibility, it is influenced by eastern philosophy and offers a sense of rational and stable readability. After studying at Capital Normal University in Beijing, China Gao recieived his MFA degree at the University of Houston. He currently lives and works in Houston, Texas.
