Charlotte Smith's paintings are a celebration of the physical act of repetition. The works in this exhibition further push the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Layers upon layers of stacked droplets and blobs of paint take shape and protrude forth from each piece, slowly and subtly injecting themselves into space. The amassed droplets become "ropes" spouting directly from the wall. The emerging patterns, contrasting hues, and variety of textures are formed into unearthly, tactile environments; each with a life of its own. Though bordering on the uncanny, Smith's paintings have an unidentifiable familiarity about them, drawing the viewer in and captivating him somewhere on the fringe of reality.
